Upendra Rao, also known as Upendra, is an Indian film director, screenwriter, lyricist, playback singer, producer, politician, and actor who primarily works in the Kannada film industry. He has also worked in a few Telugu and Tamil films. He began his film career as a writer and assistant director, working with actor and film director Kashinath. His directorial debut was with the Kannada movie Tharle Nan Maga in 1992. He made his film acting debut in the lead role with the Kannada movie A in 1998.

He debuted in Telugu as an actor with the movie Kanyadanam in 1998. Then came his psychological thriller Upendra (1999), which became a cult film. He debuted in Tamil with the movie H2O in 2002. He is well known for his works in the film, such as Preethse (2000), Super Star (2002), Kutumba (2002), Gokarna (2002), Hollywood (2002), Raktha Kanneeru (2003), Gowramma (2005), Aishwarya (2006), Anatharu (2007), Budhivanta (2008), Kalpana (2012), Godfather (2012), S/O Satyamurthy (2015), Uppi 2 (2015), I Love You (2019), and UI (2024).

He became a member of the Karnataka Pragnyavanta Janata Paksha political party in 2017. However, he left the party in 2018 because of internal conflicts and founded the Uttama Prajaakeeya Party (UPP), which was founded on the ideas of Prajākīya (citizen-centric administration). In 2015, Angkor University awarded him an Honorary Doctorate.

He was born on 18 September 1967 (age 58 years) to Manjunath Rao and Anusuya Rao in Koteshwara, Kundapura, Udupi, Karnataka, India. He has a brother, Sudheendra Rao, who is an army officer. He completed his Bachelor of Commerce from A.P.S.College of Commerce, Bengaluru. He married actress and former Miss Kolkata Priyanka Trivedi on 14 December 2003. They have a son, Ayush, and a daughter, Aishwarya.
