Syed Emraan Anwar Hashmi, also known as Emraan Hashmi, is an Indian actor primarily working in Hindi films and television series. He also appeared in a few Telugu films. Before becoming an actor, he worked as an associate director on the Hindi horror movie Raaz in 2002. He made his film acting debut with the Hindi movie Footpath in 2003. Emraan Hashmi established himself as the leading actor of Hindi cinema with roles in several successful thrillers such as Murder (2004), Zeher (2005), Aashiq Banaya Aapne (2005), Kalyug (2005), Aksar (2006), and Gangster (2006).
Then he appeared in Awarapan (2007), Jannat (2008), Raaz: The Mystery Continues (2009), Once Upon a Time in Mumbaai (2010), The Dirty Picture (2011), Murder 2 (2011), Dil Toh Baccha Hai Ji (2011), Jannat 2 (2012), Raaz 3 (2012), Shanghai (2012), Ek Thi Daayan (2013), Hamari Adhuri Kahani (2015), Azhar (2016), Raaz Reboot (2016), Baadshaho (2017), and Tiger 3 (2023).
Emraan Hashmi debuted in Telugu with the movie They Call Him OG in 2025, starring Pawan Kalyan, Priyanka Mohan, Arjun Das, Prakash Raj, and Sriya Reddy. He also appeared in TV series Bard of Blood (2019), Showtime (2024), and The Ba***ds of Bollywood (2025). He has launched an autobiographical book, The Kiss of Life, that deals with his son’s illness.
He was born on 24 March 1979 (age 47 years) to Anwar Hashmi, a businessman, and Maherahh Hashmi in Mumbai, Maharashtra, India. His father also acted in the mystery film Baharon Ki Manzil (1968). His paternal grandfather, Syed Shaukat Hashmi, migrated to Pakistan after the partition of India, where he worked as a journalist and as a film director, while his grandmother, Meherbhano Mohammad Ali (known by her screen name Purnima), was an actress who stayed in India.
Emraan Hashmi has a brother named Calvin Hashmi. He studied at Maneckji Cooper Education Trust School, Mumbai. He completed his bachelor’s degree from Sydenham College, Mumbai. He married Parveen Shahani in December 2006. The couple has a son, Ayaan Hashmi, who was born on 3 February 2010. On 15 January 2014, Ayaan was diagnosed with first-stage cancer. In January 2019, Ayaan was declared cancer-free.
