M. P. Michael, better known by his stage name Lal, is an Indian actor, director, screenwriter, producer, and distributor who mainly works in the Malayalam and Tamil film industry. He also appeared in Telugu, Kannada, Hindi, English, and Bhojpuri films. He started his career as a mimicry artist in Kalabhavan, along with his childhood friend Siddique, who would later team up as Siddique-Lal to make many films. He made his directorial debut with the Malayalam movie Ramji Rao Speaking in 1989. He made his film acting debut in a minor role in the Malayalam movie Manathe Kottaram in 1994, starring Dileep and Harisree Ashokan .
He debuted in Tamil with the movie Engal Anna in 2004. He has won several awards, including a National Film Award – Special Mention for acting (2012), two Kerala State Film Awards for Best Actor (2008, 2013), and a Filmfare Award for Best Actor – Malayalam (2008). He debuted in Telugu with the movie Khatarnak in 2006, starring Ravi Teja and Ileana D’Cruz . He made his debut in Hindi with the movie Saaho in 2019, starring Prabhas .
He is the owner of Lal Media Arts, a post-production studio. He also starred in the TV series Kerala Crime Files on Hotstar, Killer Soup on Netflix, and Suzhal: The Vortex on Amazon Prime Video. He debuted in English with the movie Before the Rains (2007), in Kannada with the movie Yuvah (2009), and in Bhojpuri with the movie Mahadev Ka Gorakhpur (2024).
He was born on 02 December 1958 (age 67 years) to M. A. Paul and Philomina in Kochi , Kerala , India . His brother, Alex Paul, is a music composer in the Malayalam film industry. His younger sister Neena’s son, Balu Varghese , is an actor in the Malayalam film industry. He studied at St. Augustine’s High School, Ernakulam. He married Nancy, and they have two children: a son, Jean Paul Lal, who is a film director, and a daughter, Monica Lal.
