Parthasarathy Srinivasan, known professionally as Kamal Haasan, is an Indian actor, film director, film producer, screenwriter, and dance choreographer who mainly works in the Tamil film industry. He also works in Malayalam, Telugu, Hindi, Kannada, and Bengali films. He is known for introducing many new technologies to the Tamil film industry. At the age of 5, he debuted as a child actor in the 1960 Tamil movie Kalathur Kannamma. He won National Film Awards, Tamil Nadu State Film Awards, Nandi Awards, Rashtrapati Award, Filmfare Awards, and Filmfare Awards South.
Kamal Haasan debuted in Malayalam with the movie Kannum Karalum in 1962 as a Child artist. He acted in his first adult role as Thiagu in the Tamil movie Arangetram in 1973. He debuted in Hindi with the movie Aaina in 1974. He debuted in Telugu with the movie Anthuleni Katha in 1976. In 1977, he debuted in Bengali with the movie Kabita and in Kannada with the movie Kokila. He appeared in his only silent film to date, Pushpaka Vimana (1987), a black comedy film, in which he played an unemployed youth and earned him his first Filmfare Award in Kannada.
Kamal Haasan was awarded the Kalaimamani Award in 1984, the Padma Shri in 1990, the Padma Bhushan in 2014, and the Order of Arts and Letters (Chevalier) in 2016. He was nominated by the Indian Prime Minister, Narendra Modi, for the Swachh Bharat Mission. On 21 February 2018, he formally launched his political party, Makkal Needhi Maiam.
He was born on 07November1954 (age 71 years) to a Tamil Iyengar Brahmin family in Paramakudi, Tamil Nadu, India. His father, D. Srinivasan, was a lawyer and freedom fighter, and his mother, Rajalakshmi, was a housewife. His brothers, Charuhasan and Chandrahasan, are also actors. His sister, Nalini, is a classical dancer.
Kamal Haasan did his primary education in Paramakudi. He married dancer Vani Ganapathy in 1978. They divorced ten years later. He married actress Sarika in 1988. They have two daughters: Shruti is a singer and a Tollywood-Kollywood actress, and Akshara is an assistant director and actress. In 2002, the couple filed for divorce, which became final in 2004. From 2005 to 2016, Haasan was in a relationship with actress Gautami.
