Mohanlal Viswanathan, also known as Mohanlal, is an Indian film producer, playback singer, film distributor, director, and actor who mainly works in the Malayalam film industry and a few Tamil, Hindi, Telugu, and Kannada films. He made his acting debut at age 18 in the Malayalam film Thiranottam in 1978, but the film was delayed in its release for 25 years due to censorship issues. His screen debut was in the Malayalam movie Manjil Virinja Pookkal in 1980. He has starred in more than 400 films during the span of his remarkable four-decade career.

The Government of India honoured him with Padma Shri in 2001 and Padma Bhushan in 2019, India’s fourth and third highest civilian honours, for his contributions to Indian cinema. In 2009, he became the first actor in India to be awarded the honorary rank of lieutenant colonel in the Territorial Army. He debuted in Tamil with the movie Gopura Vasalile in 1991.

He debuted in Telugu with the movie Gandeevam in 1994. He founded the ViswaSanthi Foundation, a non-profit charitable organisation that was started to create and deliver high-impact and focused programs to the underprivileged sections of society in Healthcare and Education. He debuted in Hindi with the movie Company in 2002. He debuted in Kannada with the movie Love in 2004. He debuted as a director with the movie Barroz in 2024. He received the Dadasaheb Phalke Award, the highest honour in Indian cinema, from the Indian government in 2025 in honour of his outstanding contributions to the development and growth of Indian cinema.

He was born on 21 May 1960 (age 66 years) to Viswanathan Nair, a former bureaucrat and Law Secretary with the Kerala government, and Santhakumari in Elanthoor, Pathanamthitta, Kerala, India and grew up in Thiruvananthapuram. He studied at Government Model Boys Higher Secondary School, Thiruvananthapuram. He graduated with a Bachelor of Commerce degree from Mahatma Gandhi College, Thiruvananthapuram. During 1977 and 1978, he was the Kerala state wrestling champion. He married Suchitra, daughter of the Tamil film producer K. Balaji, on 28 April 1988. The couple has two children, Pranav Mohanlal, who is an actor and Vismaya.
